Supplement Scams
Posted By: JimMarch 4th, 2009

Have you ever noticed that our health and nutrition “experts” never seem to get anything right? For example, one day a food may be proven to cause cancer, then the next day they’re telling us that it prevents cancer. Then they keep switching back and forth so you have no idea what to believe, and in the end it probably doesn’t even matter the slightest bit.

Well that’s how I’ve been feeling with supplements lately. I used to use whey protein after my workouts, but then I just got lazy one day and stopped and haven’t really used it since. Recently I decided to try to find some good supplements to enhance my workouts and results. Nothing too hardcore with crazy side effects or anything, mostly natural things that your body already has or creates, or naturally uses, shit like that. I came to one difinitive conclusion…screw it all. Read the rest of this entry »

Bee Pollen: Nature’s Best
Posted By: JimMay 22nd, 2008

I was at hanging out with some family friends the other day and my friend’s dad found out about yogymbo, so of course we started talking about working out. We were going back and forth about exercises and supplements when he mentioned something that really caught me by surprise, he was talking about how much more energy he has and what a better workout he has if he takes some sort of bee pollen product beforehand. I had never heard of this, so initially I thought it might have just been mind over matter or a sugar high or something, but I did a little research and this stuff might just be the real deal. Supplement Review: L-Glutamine
Posted By: JimMay 3rd, 2008

Everyone’s always looking for the powder or the pill or the diet or whatever it may be that can help them gain muscle mass fast. A lot of the things people take area geared to give them a huge burst during their actual workout. I probably spend about 6 hrs a week actually working out, which leaves 162 hrs where I’m not working out. Working out is only the catalyst that begins the muscle building process, the actual results occur in between workouts, during the recovery period. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a supplement you could take that would speed up and increase the effectiveness of your recovery period? Read the rest of this entry »

How much protein can you absorb at once?
Posted By: NashApril 20th, 2008

This subject is very interesting, because there is no definite answer. Just like most things exercise related, different things work for different people.

There are many protein shakes which offer 50+ grams of protein per serving, and I am often asked whether or not the body can handle this much protein at once.

There are many stipulations to the answer, so I’m going to try to address this question in a very careful order.

The first thing I’d like to address is that I’m answering this for body builders, not someone who is trying to lose weight, or is on any other type of weight loss regiment.

A common formula most people trying to gain mass, is that they should attempt to consume 1 gram of protein for every pound which they weigh each day. This can add up fast… Read the rest of this entry »

Way to Whey - Protein Supplement Basics
Posted By: JimMarch 30th, 2008

So I’m going to do my best to address an age old question that has plagued weight lifters for years now….how can I build muscle fast/when should I take protein? First of all I’m going to address just why whey protein is so effective.

1. Whey protein isolate, which is the purest form of whey protein, digests very quickly. This means that once you take the protein, it’ll be in your system doing its job in no time.

2. As well as being one of the fastest acting proteins, whey protein isolate is rich in Branched Chain Amino Acids (leucine, isoleucine, and valine). This helps build muscle, increase endurance, and reduces muscle deterioration. These amino acids are also important because they get metabolized directly into your muscles instead of your liver like other amino acids. Read the rest of this entry »
