Home Workout: Arms
Posted By: JimJune 10th, 2008

Continuing with the quick and convenient home workout segment, today I’m going run through a crazy arm workout, you should really be pushing yourself to the max in terms of how much weight you are using and how tired your arms get. Coincidentally enough, this follows the push/pull method we here at yogymbo have been so fond of recently. All you need is a set of dumbbells to do this workout, but having a barbell with some weights would also be helpful. It involves six exercises, three bicep and three tricep. You do one set of every exercise, and then repeat as many times as you’re comfortable with, two more times is a pretty good number. Read the rest of this entry »

Home Workout: Chest
Posted By: JimMay 27th, 2008

Most of the posts we’ve written about exercises and workouts have been written under the assumption that everyone has the time and the desire to spend an hour(s) in the gym four to five times a week. I’ve been spending a lot of time with family friends lately, what with graduation parties and everything, and somehow we would always start talking about working out and how they didn’t have the time or the energy to spend hours in the gym everyday. That being the case, I figured I’d write a short little series of articles about how you can get a good workout in the comfort of your own home with limited equipment. I’ll do a short workout for a different body part in each article and at the end you can mix and match and make it as long/short as you like. Read the rest of this entry »

Bee Pollen: Nature’s Best
Posted By: JimMay 22nd, 2008

I was at hanging out with some family friends the other day and my friend’s dad found out about yogymbo, so of course we started talking about working out. We were going back and forth about exercises and supplements when he mentioned something that really caught me by surprise, he was talking about how much more energy he has and what a better workout he has if he takes some sort of bee pollen product beforehand. I had never heard of this, so initially I thought it might have just been mind over matter or a sugar high or something, but I did a little research and this stuff might just be the real deal. Final Workout
Posted By: JimMay 10th, 2008

To those loyal fans of yogymbo, I apologize for the lack of daily updating recently, but there has been an absolute sleu of events that have been eating up my time before graduation. For about the next five days I will be in the Bahamas and unable to post any new articles (poor me I know). I did feel it was necessary to comment on what was most likely the last workout that Nash and I will have at Bentley College. That’s not to say we won’t workout together in the future, but it probably won’t be at bentley. Read the rest of this entry »

Supplement Review: L-Glutamine
Posted By: JimMay 3rd, 2008

Everyone’s always looking for the powder or the pill or the diet or whatever it may be that can help them gain muscle mass fast. A lot of the things people take area geared to give them a huge burst during their actual workout. I probably spend about 6 hrs a week actually working out, which leaves 162 hrs where I’m not working out. Working out is only the catalyst that begins the muscle building process, the actual results occur in between workouts, during the recovery period. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a supplement you could take that would speed up and increase the effectiveness of your recovery period? Read the rest of this entry »

Bad Ass Marines - Military Workouts
Posted By: JimApril 30th, 2008

So I don’t know about the rest of you, but when I think about the gold standard of overall physical fitness, one of the first things I think about is the military and how there’s no way in Hell I could even come close to keeping up with their crazy six mile runs and whatnot. Their boot camp workouts just get these people into shape in every way shape and form, from muscle strength, to muscular endurance, to cardiovascular fitness. One of the really impressive things about this is that since the military trains in such large groups, they have very limited time in facilities to weight train. As a result, most of their workouts are body weight resistance based. Pushups, pullups, crunches, and distance running are the staples of the military workout. I’ve recently become a huge fan of the pullup and in my opinion it’s the best and hardest exercise you can do. Read the rest of this entry »

2 Plates….ON EACH SIDE - NFL Combine Workout
Posted By: JimApril 25th, 2008

If any of you follow football, then you most likely know a thing or two about the NFL combine workout. For those of you who don’t, there is a portion of the workout where the players are asked to bench press 225lbs as many times in a row as they can. In talking to a couple of people I know who either play, have played, or are involved in football, I was given the idea of actually incorporating this into a real workout. It’s a very complicated process so pay close attention….you lift 225lbs as many times as you can…..then you rest and do it three more times ha. Read the rest of this entry »

Product Review: Perfect Pushup
Posted By: JimApril 23rd, 2008

Pushups are a great exercise to do because they are so simple and you can work so many different body parts at the same time. One problem with a regular pushup is that you might not necessarily get the range of motion you desire on the way down. The Perfect Pushup and the Pushup Pro are two items which really help you work your back and outside chest muscles on your pushups. Additionally, the handles on both items can rotate at your own discretion. Read the rest of this entry »

The Basics of Core Training
Posted By: JimApril 19th, 2008

When most people hear “core training” the first thing they think about are your abs. While the abdominals are definitely a part of your core muscles, there’s much more to it than that. The list of muscles that actually make up your “core” is open to interpretation, but generally they’re the muscles that run the length of your spine/torso. I don’t really consider chest and upper back core muscles, but that’s just me. These muscles are responsible for stabilizing everything from your hips to your spine to your shoulders and they give you a strong base so you can better control your body. Trap-tastic
Posted By: JimApril 16th, 2008

In case you couldn’t tell, a certain yogymbo writer who shall remain anonymous (there are only two of us by the way) really likes forearms. I find this interesting because he in fact has a girlfriend, but that’s for another post. Anyhow, I figured I’d write a little something about a body part that I’m more of a fan of than Nash, and that would be your trapezius muscles. Now I’m not saying I want to have those massive roid traps that engulf your entire neck, but it’s a muscle that I feel like you can get some nice definition with and I think they just look pretty cool.
