New Routine - 5 x 5
Posted By: JimApril 14th, 2008

So Nash and I have been doing this “push/pull” workout for about five weeks now I would say. For those of you not familiar with it, we basically took two opposite body parts (chest and back or biceps and triceps for example) and worked them both on the same day. Not only that, but we would do two exercises at the same time, kind of like circuit training. As soon as I finished a set of bench, I would go into a row exercise for a set, and then right back for another set on the bench etc. until the first two exercises were done. At that point we would move on to the second pair of exercises.

I thought this was a great workout because it allowed one muscle group to recover while we were working the other one, so we could do a quick, nonstop, yet intense workout. Additionally, we split our chest and back workout between two days because it would have just been too long otherwise (you should really only need to workout for about an hour to an hour and a half per day). This really got me pumped up for chest and back days because I knew I could just go all out on every exercise without worrying about saving anything or being drained before the end of the workout.

Unfortunately the time has come to change up our routine. We’ve decided to try out something called a 5×5 workout. This involves doing five sets of every exercise that we do, but only five reps each time. In terms of weights, you should be lifting the same amount every set, but it should be the maximum amount of weight that you can complete the workout with. The muscle groups are also usually split up pretty well, meaning we’ll probably be working around four different muscle groups every day, just not many exercises on each group. It should be a pretty interesting workout, and we’ll review it later tonight/tomorrow, but if anyone has any comments about the 5×5 or suggestions for other workouts you’d like us to review, then feel free to let us know either via comment or email, they both work.
